MANUAL THERAPIES

Manual therapy is an integral part of the treatment. Manual therapies are physical techniques carried out with an aim to promote blood flow, reduce pain, reduce muscle spasm, release adhesions, increase flexibility and improve mobility. The manual therapies the treatment may include are as follows:

MASSAGE

TRIGGER POINT RELEASE

MYOFASCIAL RELEASE

PASSIVE RANGE OF MOTION

STRETCHES

ELECTROTHERAPIES

PULSE MAGNETIC FIELD

THERAPY (PMFT)

PMFT is the application of pulsed electromagnetic waves which stimulates cells, restoring or changing cell potential, thus enhancing repair processes.

Pulsed Magnetic Field Therapy (PMFT) is effective for reducing inflammation, alleviating pain, reducing muscle spasm, and can enhance bone healing and nerve regeneration.

Different settings provide a range of therapeutic effects.

LASER THERAPY

(CLASS 3B)

Laser therapy uses infrared and visible red light applied to an area using high intensity light emitting diodes. Energy is transferred from the laser and absorbed into the tissue, primarily into the mitochondria of the cells, thus up-regulating the cells.

It has been found to enhance wound repair, enhance circulation - improving tissue regeneration, reduce inflammation, enhance nerve regeneration and alleviate pain.

THERAPEUTIC ULTRASOUND

Therapeutic ultrasound is the application of ultrasonic sound waves to an area causing mechanical micro-massage of tissues.

Ultrasound helps to increase circulation, enhance / encourage appropriate collagen production, improve tissue extensibility and reduce scar tissue formation. Ultrasound also has a thermal effect which increases the temperature of the tissue helping to relieve muscle spasm and alleviate pain.

NMES

(NEUROMUSCULAR ELECTRICAL STIMULATION)

NMES uses an electrical current to stimulate targeted muscles. This can be used to help rebuild and maintain muscle mass.

TENS

(TRANSCUTANEOUS ELECTRICAL NERVE STIMULATION)

TENS stimulates sensory and motor nerves, the main use of TENS is for controlling pain.

EXERCISE PRESCRIPTION

Structured exercise plans will be prescribed specific to each animal. Exercises are given to enhance muscular strength, range of motion and proprioception. Exercise prescription is fundamental for long term improvement of the animals mobility, comfort and performance.

The exercises Robyn will prescribe will be easily adaptable for your at-home exercise plan. Robyn will demonstrate the exercises with you at the appointment and make sure you are comfortable with each set of exercises.
